The Art of Community

Dictionary.com defines the word "art" as, "the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance."

That is a mouth full, but simplified, one can define art as, "a realm of what is beautiful and appealing."

Dictionary.com defines the word "community" as, "a group of people sharing common characteristics or interests."

Here is my question:

If art can be a realm then can there be a "art of community"?

  1. In some sense I feel that the Amish have an "art of community." Despite many things that I disagree with them on regarding the principles behind their lifestyle - if is certainly a type of art to live like that in modern western culture.

I find the Amish community beautiful in its simplicity, appealing for its family values, and of more than ordinary significance (note all the interest in them)

It also seems relevant to argue that the community of saints in heaven would be a masterpiece of divine art.

  2. J,

I agree with you about the Amish however, there is a real danger in attaching "justification" or salvation to a rejection of culture.

Simplicity is nice but not if it is required for righteousness.

    Mm
